I was thinking of changing my five way pickup selector to a three way selector because in this articular guitar i only use the neck middle and bridge pickup by themselves instead of the 2nd and forth position. I have two questions, I saw 3 way pickup selectors for sale by fender, but are they for telecasters only, and two, can you recommend one that wil be the same quality as the one in my american strat? I don't want to downgrade. Do you think it will make a difference in making it easier to switch between pickups. Ive heard of 4 way selectors because some people don't like using the neck and middle at the same time, do you find it easier to select the right position rather than fretting for it? My other guitar, I use all 5 positions, this is just for one guitar.

You won't downgrade just by changing the 3-way selector switch. Just buy a good brand name and it will do the job perfectly.

On a 3-way switch, if you set the switch between 2 and 3 position, you will get a 4th tone without having the need to purchase a 4-way selector. Its an old trick but it works.

The 3 way switch makes it easier because you don't have the in-between switch.

Hello there,

Thumbs up to Tony. Good answer.

If you buy a new Fender 3 way switch, it comes with both switch tips, the Tele style and the Strat style in the package. CRL was the brand Fender used to use. Now it is Oak Grimsley.

Later,

I missed the latter part of your question.

Easier to swtich? I cannot see where a 3 way switch would be any easier or faster to use than a 5 way. I have guitars with both. I have not noticed a difference.

4 way switch? Some Teles are coming out with a 4 way switch. I don't have one. I understand those are used so you can switch from series to parallel. I have never heard that the 4 way was used for avoiding the neck/middle combination. I use the neck/middle a lot. I rarely use the middle/bridge postion. When I want the tone of the bridge pickup, I usually want it alone. One of my Strats is a Dick Dale Signature Custom Shop Strat. It has a 3 way switch with a separate toggle to get the neck/middle.

Easier to select the right position rather than fretting for it? I have no idea what you mean.

Hiya there, sure, you can wire one of the crucial positions on the change for neck/bridge collectively. With a three means switch on a Strat, by and large there may be one role for each pickup. However as you've got already found, you can wire two pickups to any of those positions. You simply have 3 choices open on the swap. If you happen to wire one role to the neck, a second to the mid/birdge and the last to the neck/bridge, you haven't any positions left for the bridge on my own or the core by myself. If you are willing to sacrifice these, which you could wire the neck/bridge collectively. Later,

Fender three way switches will work in both types of guitar. As you probably know, originally both guitars were fitted with three way switches. Teh switches were identical.
