Definately SRV, no question about it. John Mayer doesn't even come close to how great SRV was with a guitar. All of JM songs sound the same, whereas SRV is very diverse in how he sounds on each album, and it's still great!

I love John Mayer, the guitar player and songwriter...

But SRV came first, and went too soon :(

If SRV were alive today, he'd be proud of ppl like Kenny Wayne Shepherd and JM...

Stevie Ray Vaughan spawned an entire generation of young guitarists like JM looking to recreate SRV's sound and building up on it... He's the best.

srv no questions asked

mayer plays srv's stuff and has a decent grip on srv's playing

and mayer has a great tone

but hes just copying srv

(which isnt bad, i try to also)

but srv is a legend

mayer is probably the best we've got of the current musicians though

SRV !

I have 3 boring CDs from JM. And I have about 15 great CDs by SRV. And two video cassettes. There is no comparison.

Just where can I find these 'guitar talents that set Mayer apart from others today' ?

His CD, "Continuum", I have re-named 'Continuous Ho-hum'. Every song has the same boring beat, with no real guitar work at all.

Email me...what CD is he so good on???

Stevie for sure. Mayer will most likely to hone his craft beyond srv because he's so young but srv takes the cake for now and unfortunately can't get any better since he's dead'

Stevie Ray Vaughan by the biggest margin of all time! Come on now, that can't be a serious question. I mean Mayer isn't all that bad, but considering he's going up against the greatest ever is just plain crazy. Mayer will never get to Stevie's level, NEVER!

JM is a fantastic + talented player. his blues based solo got him on the cover of the rollingstone magazine several times and his guitar skills sets him apart from most artists today. But SRV was a guitar phenomenon, a legend. His guitar skills and lightspeed solo is unmatched.

SRV is john's idol, JM said it himself. John even has a SRV tattoo! damn!

my vote - no doubt about it SRV 100%

This is like asking whether barbecue baby back ribs or sirloin steak is better. They are both really great meats, but they taste different enough that you will crave one over the other at different times. Both go with slightly different moods. Today, John Mayer, tomorrow Stevie, and the cycle continues.
